SyFy Design Build Log

Prototype No. 006

Commissioned the 04 of April, 2020

Iteration of the mATX/SF ISD inspired computer case. Printed in Grey PLA at .2 mm layer height with a with a 0.4 mm nozzle 55/210 degree bed/nozzle temp at 35 mm/s print speed.

Design goals for test print: Iteration to support iGPU’s. First print on newly upgraded printers. (Linear rails with Hemera extruder)

Issues to be fixed: Misc clearance optimizations. Added additional mATX motherboard support.

Prototype No. 005

Commissioned the 11 of December, 2019

Iteration of the mATX/SF ISD inspired computer case. Printed in Silk Blue PLA at .3 mm layer height with a 0.5 mm nozzle 55/210 degree bed/nozzle temp at 35 mm/s print speed.

Design goals for test print: Triple Slot graphics card, Attachment of newly designed aft end piece.

Issues to be fixed: Need additional mounting point for bridge to aft end (Noticeable gap when assembled)

0.5 mm nozzle produces a rougher looking print, additional time for .2mm layer height with 0.4 mm nozzle may be worth it.

Need to design a new stand with integrated 240mm AIO for high-end computers to capitalize on triple-slit card. As well as AIO cooling tube inlet channel

Prototype No. 005

Commissioned the 23 of AUGUST, 2019

Iteration of the mATX/SF ISD inspired computer case. Printed in Rainbow Steampunk PLA at .2 mm layer height with a 0.4 mm nozzle 55/210 degree bed/nozzle temp at 35 mm/s print speed.

Design goals for test print: Attachment of front piece to rest of case: threaded inserts (Needs more support for the front piece, Bolts holding case together would look better counter-sunk.)

Issues to be fixed: Fit for power button (Required more tolerance). Details refined for better print-ability (Bridge may need to be larger, consideration for triple slot graphics cards?)

Prototype No. 004

Commissioned the 15 of JULY, 2019

Iteration of the mATX/SF ISD inspired computer case. Printed in Gold Silk PLA at .2 mm layer height with a 0.4 mm nozzle 55/210 degree bed/nozzle temp at 35 mm/s print speed.

Design goals for test print:

Attachment of front piece to rest of case: threaded inserts (z-axis obstruction during printing prevented testing)

Attachment of top to bottom: threaded inserts (Good)

How added detail will print (Good-ish, need to tweak retraction settings and give details more depth)

Printer modified with linear rails for X and Y axis’s as well as Titan Aero extruder. (Z-axis wobble present)

Prototype No. 003

Commissioned the 08 of MAY, 2019

Iteration of the mATX/SF ISD inspired computer case. Printed in Bronze Metallic PLA at .4 mm layer height with a 0.5 mm nozzle 55/210 degree bed/nozzle temp at 45 mm/s print speed.

Design goals for test print:

Fit of motherboard inside of case (Good)

Graphics card area strength and clearances (some bowing when printed as separate ‘tower’, added more tie-ins to rest of case to mitigate)

Attachment of top to bottom, with screws (3 attachments, vice 5, might look better)

Attachment of front piece to rest of case: latch (build volume not adequate, try threaded insert for next iteration)

Prototype No. 002

Commissioned the 25 of APRIL, 2019

Iteration of the mATX/SF ISD inspired computer case. Printed in PLA at .5 mm layer height with a 0.6 mm nozzle 55/210 degree bed/nozzle temp at 30 mm/s print speed.

Design goals for test print:

2 mm wall thickness (Good thickness)

Printer modified to direct drive (Titan Extruder with Volcano Hot End) instead of stock bowden extruder.

0.6 mm nozzle (Adequate, need to test with details)

Fit of motherboard inside of case (I/O shield placement required tweaking, RAM requires more tolerance)

Graphics card area strength and clearances (Reinforcements sucessful)

Attachment of front piece to rest of case: Built in Clip (requires better tolerance)

Prototype No. 001

Commissioned the 04 of APRIL, 2019

Initial iteration of a Star Wars - Imperial Star Destroyer (ISD) inspired mATX/SF computer case. Printed in PLA at .3 mm layer height with a 0.4 mm nozzle 55/210 degree bed/nozzle temp at 40 mm/s print speed.

Design goals for test print:

Test new large format printer (Total case width decreased by 2 CM to fit build volume)

1 mm wall thickness (Too thin, increased to 2 mm on subsequent prints)

Fit of motherboard inside of case (some mounting holes slightly off, I/O shield placement required tweaking)

Graphics card area strength and clearances (Added reinforcement on underside)

Serial No. 001

Commissioned the 10 of FEBRUARY, 2019

Original masterpiece based on a Star Wars Eclipse Class Star Destroyer, coming in at 3 foot 10 inches, constructed over the course of 42 days in 65 pieces. Designed to fit a full ATX Motherboard, Power Supply, 2 Hard Drives, and a 240mm AIO cooler.

Printed in Carbon Fiber infused Poly Carbonate at .25 mm layer height with a 0.4 mm nozzle 110/225 degree bed/nozzle temp, with a 45 mm/s print speed.
